Last CSA Farm Box

So the verdict? I don't think we'll get another farm share. I really, really enjoyed getting the boxes and the challenge of making the different vegetables. I certainly did try new ones but I think I wasted and gave away a lot too.

And I think I really don't like squash. Squash. I got lots of squash in these last few boxes. I don't know what to do with them. We'll see.

BUT I did get a pumpkin! Mmmmmmmm. Pumpkin pie. I'm saving lots of my points for a piece. Just one piece.

Did you know that brussel sprouts grow like this? and how many kinds of squash ARE THERE?!

Well, it was a great experience. I look forward to hitting farmers markets all over the metro next year, and not just for the safe and easy vegetables. We need to try new things too.

What's in your veggie drawer?

I'm posting this because I saw this topic on one of my new favorite blogs.

I have to admit that I just have too much in my vegetable drawers right now.

On the left I have my grocery store vegetables: bell pepper, lemons, cucumber, cabbage, ginger, carrot sticks, green onions.

On the right I have my famer's market and CSA farm share items: lemon cucumbers, a few different kinds of squash, swiss chard, kohlrabi, and way underneath I have some cucumbers that I'm making into pickles. I used two English cucumbers from my CSA box. I'll share that recipe in a few days when I've tasted them.

On the shelf above the drawers: sweet corn from the grocery store (MN grown), CSA broccoli, CSA lettuce blends, farmer's market sugar snap peas.

To use up some vegetables tonight we're having Dijon potato salad, oven fried chicken, and probably some grilled zucchini. I'm also going to chop up that kohlrabi and just try it raw like some of my FB friends suggested.

CSA Farm Share Box #1

The farm sent an email that the first boxes would be light. The rain really did a number on their harvests- I guess some of the lettuces were beaten to the ground. It's still pretty early for most vegetables but I'm glad to start slow so I can get a feel for what I know and don't know. I did refer back to their email to identify two of the vegetables in here.

Clockwise from top left: Swiss chard, leaf lettuce blends, pea shoots (I think), and baby radishes and green onions.

I'm assuming these are all salad items. I'm going to research what I can do with the swiss chard and the pea shoots (both new to me!) I'm also not a big fan of radish but I have to admit I haven't had them for years. My grown up self might like them now :)

We didn't have much of a dinner planned for tonight, and I had picked up a rotisserie chicken so I just shredded some chicken on our salads. I think the lettuces were noticably different from store-bought lettuce. I think they were the freshest we've ever tasted (picked this morning! delivered this early afternoon for a 4:00 pick-up!) and they were bright tasting and a little spicy, maybe.

We had the carrots and mushrooms. What a nice start! I think every other week is not often enough now :) But we'll see.
